Bill Chavez has furnished this phone number for Sister Constance: 310-889-2100 ext. 4948.
Bill and Pattie Chavez' daughter, Denise, was an All American field hockey player in high school. But her honors didn't stop there. Now Denise Chavez Eachus, she's the coach of Monta Vista Field Hockey. Denise and her JV coach were recently named by the Positive Coaching Aliance as one of fifty national winners for the 2016 Double-Goal Coach Award. Only one other field hockey coach was awarded this prestigious honor. They were selected from over 2,400 nominations of high school coaches across the nation. This award honors coaches whom impact the lives of athletes in a positive manner, striving to win, while also pursuing the more important goal of teaching life lessons through sports.
Dolly Kuduk McDevitt sends word of an interesting new book: "This book may be of some interest to the history buffs among our classmates. I thought it might be worth posting. I believe some of these "Boys" were quartered in the basement of St. Vincent's high school. I don't remember too much about the war, but my husband (6 years older than me) has lots of memories of the barrage balloons along the waterfront, etc. I haven't read the book yet, but hope to do so real soon."
Your webmaster moved across the street from Washington Playground in 1947 and recalls talk about the barrage balloons that were stationed there during "the war."
The book's back cover quotes Margaret Riley Finley's father commenting on the deployment of the 211th Coast Artillery to Vallejo during World War II: Writing in his October 1962 Sunday Notebook column, Vallejo Times Herald Editor Wyman Riley reported that “there was probably no community in the United States so affected by troops stationed within its city.”
The Boys from Boston, by Gary Cullen
The famed 211th Coast Artillery Anti-Aircraft Regiment from Boston, Massachusetts arrived into the City of Vallejo a few days after the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Its job: to protect Mare Island Naval Shipyard and the City of Vallejo from any further Japanese attacks. They set up their anti-aircraft guns on every hill, and then waited for what fortunately never came. In the meantime, their good looks, army green uniforms, east coast charm, and Bostonian accents, captured the hearts of the Vallejo community. The Boys From Boston is a compilation of stories that tell of that time, when 1800 soldiers came to the Vallejo community, and how they were welcomed with open arms at the onset of the war. The Boys would return to the town with the beautiful women, to marry, to raise families, and to start new civilian careers. This is their story.

Bill Chavez suggested that we give Father Leo a call to see what’s new. So we did. He just moved back to Alma Via after an extended, but highly successful, stay at the Jewish Home. His blood poisoning illness is gone, he’s lost a lot of weight, and he’s getting around quite handily with his walker. He has some more physical therapy scheduled at Alma Via, but he’s already talking of the next step which is moving back to St. Dominic’s Priory in San Francisco. Leo sounds great and welcomes calls on his cell phone: 415-500-1041.
Sister Anne Bertain advises that Father Felix Cassidy passed away Friday. The website for St. Dominic’s Church in San Francisco reports that he died peacefully Friday morning at 7:25 am. He was at home, in the priory, in his own bed, with his rosary. Funeral arrangements at St. Dominic’s will include Vigil with Rosary, Thursday, 11/19/15, 7:30 pm, Funeral Mass, Friday, 11/20/15, 10:00 am. May he rest in peace and rise to glory.
Sister Anne adds that burial will follow in Benicia.
Upon learning of Father’s death, Bob Moelk responded, Fr. Cassidy married Claudia and me in 1963. He was one of the kindest persons we've ever known, truly Christ-like.
Tom Gallagher '56 found this photo and sent it along with this note: The only picture of Father I have. Sorry to learn of his passing. We liked him very much. Thought you might like to share.
Gary Coronado sent this memory: I thank The Lord tonight for the gift of Father Cassidy. I was in attendance at Father’s ordination---I was in the eighth grade and was one of the first to receive his blessing. He was one of a kind. Since my parents lived across the street from the SV rectory, we spent lots of time together watching baseball or throwing a football in the alley behind our home. He baptized my niece and was loved dearly by my family. He will be missed by the many people he touched during his priestly life.
Sister Anne Bertain, Gary Coronado, and Bill Chavez were among the estimated one thousand people who filled St. Dominic’s Church for the funeral mass on November 20.

Tom Gallagher '56 found this photo on Facebook and sent it along. Interesting attire — no caps and gowns in those days. Looks like First Communion all over again! And what’s with the two cherubs in the front row? Click the photo for a larger view. We've unearthed some old newpaper accounts of the big day, including a list of graduates. You can read them by clicking here.
We just found a 10-day-old email from Bill Chavez in our junk mail folder. Bill gave a progress report on Father Leo so we thought we ought to call Leo for an up-to-date update. He is now in the Jewish Home in San Francisco undergoing extensive physical therapy to get walking again. He's making good progress and expects to return to his Alma Via residence in about two weeks. Leo sounds great and welcomes calls on his cell phone: 415-500-1041.

Bill Chavez reports that Fr. Leo LaBelle's 50th Jubilee as a priest was a grand success with close to 300 in attendance to honor him. Bill regrets that he and Pattie could not attend due to a prior scheduling conflict with a family reunion. However he sent these photos (provided by Claire Labelle) and a copy of Father Leo's 2015 Epiphany Letter (provided by Gary Coronado).
Owen Boyle and wife Suzanne greet Leo.
Father Leo poses with Christian Brothers from St. Mary's College and Mont LaSalle.

Bill Chavez writes "Pattie and I had a great visit with Fr. Leo on Sunday, April 27. He is in good spirits and we caught up on some old news."

Another note from Sister Anne (Martha) Bertain: "I just got word that Ethel passed away on Friday. The family is planning a memorial service. Not sure of any of the details. I will pass on info when I hear. With prayers, Martha"
A note from Sister Anne (Martha) Bertain: "A friend of mine contacted me on 4/7/15 to let me know Ethel O'Neal Stahlecker has been in ICU at Queen of the Valley Hospital on dialysis in critical condition. She has been released but is not expected to live much longer. Please keep Ethel and her family in your prayers. Blessings. Martha Bertain (Sister Anne)"
Bill Chavez writes "I recall a dance at Casa de Vallejo with the Babe Polatta (?spelling) Band playing for us. It was some kind of Class dance I think. I remember helping with the decorations and the glass ball spinning from the ceiling."
Bill hasn't lost his marbles yet. Here's a photo from the "Moments to Remember" dance held at the Casa de Vallejo in our junior year. The five couples are posing on the stairway leading down to the hotel ballroom. (For more photos from this dance turn to page 63 of the 1956 Hilltop.)
We received this note from Father Leo LaBelle on the mystery photo and some news on an upcoming anniversary:
I agree with all of the ID's. HOWEVER, I don't think we ever had a dance off campus. I can recall asking if we could do something as wild as have a dance at the Casa de Vallejo but, I think, we were turned down. I can remember some kind of social at Green Valley but I don' think that it was one of the four "big" dances, i.e., Freshman Reception, Sophomore Hop, Junior Prom or the Senior Ball. I also recall having some kind of dance at the Officers Club on Mare Island. For some reason I think we were limited to the old gym in the high school building or the NEW Memorial Center.
On another matter. I will celebrate the 50th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood on April 23rd of this year. To allow for family travel the actual celebration will be on Saturday, July 11 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Raymond Parish in Menlo Park. I would love to have the class know they are very welcome to be a part of the event. I will have you post an invitation on the website when it is available.
Happy Easter!
Leo LaBelle, O.P.
We received responses from Terry Curtola, Mary Collins Gallagher, Betty House Moreira, Bill Chavez, Dan Leary, Jeanne Hasenpusch Matle, and Rollie Freitas.
Here are the six mystery persons from left to right: Jeanne Hasenpusch Matle, Phil Avellar, Lynn Bedford (although Jean Greggins got one vote), Tom Gallagher, Midge Yacovetti, Bill Blake.
Terry recalls the venue as a dance called “Rocket to the Moon” in our junior year. Mary says her husband Tom recalls the dance as being at the Green Valley Country Club.
We recently heard from Tom Gallagher '56 and his wife, Mary Collins '56. Tom sent us this photo, figuring we'd enjoy seeing a younger Phil Avellar. But who are the other folks in the picture? Tom must be the tall guy with glasses. The girl in front of him looks to me like Midge Yacovetti. Do you recognize anyone? Let us know. And what was the deal with the rocketship? Or whatever it is?
We'll post your responses here on the Bulletin Board in a few days.
Sister Ramona's surgery went well. Thanks for your prayers!
